Apple is expected to remove the ‘Plus’ model in the 2025 iPhone 17 series. Well, how will the iPhone 17 Air, which is expected to come instead? Here's all you need to know about Apple's thinnest phone.
While iPhone 16 and iPhone 16 Pro sales continue, new information has emerged about the iPhone 17 Air, which is rumoured to be the most striking model in Apple's 2025 iPhone 17 series. iPhone 17 Air, which is said to replace the iPhone 17 Plus, will be Apple's thinnest profile phone ever. Well, what do we know about it?
Initially dubbed iPhone 17 Slim, then iPhone 17 Air, the fourth model in Apple's lineup next year will offer a new design. It will be positioned between the iPhone 17 and iPhone 17 Pro and will feature a significantly thinner design. Apple is said to do this by using an aluminium chassis instead of a titanium chassis.
The notch section, which Apple calls the dynamic island, will be narrower on iPhone 17 Air. The phone's screen will be 6.6 inches. The iPhone 16 Plus currently on sale has a 6.7-inch screen. Apple is rumoured to be testing different designs for a thinner phone, so the screen size may change.
Apple is rumoured to use a ProMotion display across its entire product line, including the iPhone 17 Air in 2025. This means the phone will be able to accelerate to a refresh rate of up to 120Hz for smoother scrolling and video content when needed. ProMotion will also enable the display to button down to a low power-saving refresh rate of up to 1Hz, allowing for an always-on display that can show the lock screen's clock, widgets, notifications and wallpaper when the phone is locked. Currently, ProMotion technology is limited to Pro models. All iPhone 17 models will come with an anti-reflective screen that is more resistant to scratches than Ceramic Shield.
The new model, which will be called iPhone 17 Slim or Air, will adopt a camera setup that we have never seen in iPhones released so far. It is rumoured that Apple may move the rear cameras to the upper centre section of the device, as in the Google Pixel 9 Pro. iPhone camera system has occupied the upper left corner since the 2007 model. In addition to the new camera layout, it is claimed that the device will have a single camera.
The entire iPhone 17 series will feature a 24-megapixel front-facing camera with a six-element lens. The iPhone 16 series features a 12MP front-facing camera. The upgraded resolution on iPhone 17 means that the photo will retain its quality even when cropped or zoomed in, while the greater number of pixels will capture finer details. The six-element lens will also slightly improve image quality.
The iPhone 16 models come with 8GB of RAM, which is the hardware requirement of in-device Apple Intelligence. iPhone 17 Air is also rumoured to come with 8GB of RAM. The device will likely be equipped with the Apple A19 chip based on an optimised version of TSMC's 3nm manufacturing process (NP3 or N3X). Apple may also use its own 5G modem in this phone.
It is rumoured that iPhone 17 Air may have a higher price tag than the Pro Max model starting at $ 1200.
