It may become possible to change the email address for a Google account

The information comes from an official Google support page, which notes that the feature will be introduced gradually. This means users should not expect immediate access, and it is still unclear whether it will become available to everyone.

According to the support documentation, Google may allow users to update the email address linked to their account once every 12 months. However, this is not a full replacement of the old address. Instead, the original email will remain active, and a new one will be added as an additional alias connected to the same account.

Users will continue to work with a single inbox and outbox, but they may be able to filter messages based on which address they were sent to and choose which email address to use when sending messages. In practice, this would allow up to three additional email addresses to be linked to one existing Google account, while keeping all data and services intact.

It is still unclear whether this option will support merging multiple Google accounts into one.

This potential change is especially interesting because many users maintain more than one Google account for different purposes, such as separating personal and work communication. While Gmail has never officially encouraged such setups, it already offers advanced server-side filtering and conditional forwarding at no cost. If implemented, the new feature could make complex email management even more efficient, including for managed Google accounts, such as those used in educational environments.

There are also limitations to consider: a maximum of three additional email addresses, each added at yearly intervals, for a total of four addresses per account. Once added, these addresses reportedly cannot be removed. It is also unknown how this feature would function for Google Workspace accounts that use custom email domains. Many details remain to be clarified.
