iPhone 18: eSIM-only format enters the European market in 2026

Apple’s next-generation iPhone 18 is expected to trigger a paradigm shift in mobile connectivity across European markets by adopting a 100% eSIM-only design—eliminating physical SIM trays in the process. (Best smartphone)

This strategic shift, which builds on Apple’s early U.S. rollout of eSIM-only iPhones starting with the iPhone 14, is projected to enable sleeker device designs and meaningful functional improvements. According to the GSMA’s smartphone survey, 40% of mobile network operators expected manufacturers to release eSIM-only models in 2020 and 2021.

eSIM Technology and Apple’s iPhone 18 Plans

In 2022, Apple became the first company in the United States to introduce an eSIM-only iPhone, later expanding the strategy to other markets, including Mexico, Japan, and roughly a dozen countries by the launch of the iPhone 17. eSIM technology is a convenient alternative to traditional SIM cards, enabling quick activation and instant deactivation.

However, it may be less suitable for people who frequently switch devices. Apple is expected to launch the iPhone 18 series at the same starting price as its iPhone 17 counterparts. The iPhone 18 Pro and iPhone 18 Pro Max are expected to be announced in September this year, alongside the iPhone Fold. The standard iPhone 18 could be released next year, together with the iPhone Air.

Battery Boost and Pricing Strategy

A key advantage of removing the SIM tray is the potential to make room for larger battery cells. According to a growing number of reports, the iPhone 18 Pro Max could be the first iPhone to exceed 5,000 mAh. This information comes from Digital Chat Station, a well-known Chinese leaker with a track record of sharing accurate supply-chain details.

Battery capacity is expected to land between 5,100 and 5,200 mAh, up from the 4,823 mAh found in the current iPhone 17 Pro Max. Pricing is expected to remain unchanged, with the iPhone 18 Pro priced at $1,099 and the iPhone 18 Pro Max at $1,199, reportedly supported by alliances with Samsung suppliers to mitigate memory-chip shortages. Moreover, speculation around a foldable iPhone 18 variant is generating additional buzz and could potentially position Samsung to dominate that segment.

Outlook

Looking ahead, this move could reinforce Apple’s market leadership through 2027, as eSIM requirements expand through EU legislation and competitors push forward to stay relevant. As a result, the European market may be ready to embrace this transformation with confidence.
