TikTok Ban May Be Delayed: Donald Trump Intervenes

The U.S. government is preparing to officially ban the TikTok platform in the coming weeks. However, newly re-elected President Donald Trump has filed an appeal to the Supreme Court to delay the ban.

The ongoing tension between the U.S. and China continues to affect tech companies. After the ban on Huawei, all eyes are now on TikTok. Concerns about TikTok’s impact on society and its data collection practices have brought it to the verge of a nationwide ban. Just days before this ban takes effect, Donald Trump has stepped in.

Can Donald Trump Prevent the TikTok Ban?

In 2020, Donald Trump supported banning TikTok. However, his stance has changed over the years. Trump now believes that banning TikTok would make Facebook too powerful, which he views as harmful to the public. As a result, Trump has taken a significant step by filing a petition with the U.S. Supreme Court to delay the ban.

The U.S. government launched major investigations into TikTok last year and announced that the platform would be banned if it wasn’t sold to an American company. This ban is set to go into effect on January 19, 2025. However, with Donald Trump assuming office on January 20, 2025, he won’t be able to intervene directly.

Despite this, Trump has requested additional time from the Supreme Court and has sought a legal solution to the TikTok issue. The  U.S. Supreme Court will review Trump’s appeal on January 10 and decide whether to postpone the ban.
