Technology coming to make eSIM obsolete

Electronic SIM, or eSIM, is a very helpful technology when you need to use another carrier while on the go, traveling, but Qualcomm has a much better technology: iSIM.

The iSIM or Integrated SIM functionality that the chipmaker has included in the Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 platform makes the line switching process much smoother and faster. Unlike eSIM, it is located in the main processor of the phone. This means that the technology takes up much less space inside the device compared to physical SIM slots or even eSIM. According to Qualcomm, iSIM technology will reduce costs and increase efficiency for smartphone manufacturers. It will also allow manufacturers to create smaller, more compact devices. What's more, according to mobile device security company Thales working with Qualcomm, iSIMs will use less power compared to eSIMs. On the security side, it supports the same high-standard security protections as the latest generation eSIMs.

When will iSIM become widespread?

iSIM submissions will reach 300 million by 2027 and represent 19% of all eSIM sales. This is Qualcomm's prediction. Qualcomm did not share information on whether the current Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 processor phones, such as the Galaxy S23 series, have iSIM feature. But according to Thales, iSIMs will be made available on high-end smartphones first. It will then be available on mid-range and entry-level smartphones as well as wearables.
