OpenAI has announced that with the new Advanced Voice Mode integration, users can now interact with the popular ChatGPT chatbot directly on PC or Mac devices through voice.
OpenAI has activated the Advanced Voice Mode (AVM) feature, allowing ChatGPT users to have human-like voice conversations on desktop devices. PC and Mac users can now access this mode. The company shared this update on X(formerly Twitter) with the message, “A big day for desktop.”
With this update, users can now communicate with ChatGPT in natural language without needing to type. AVM works based on OpenAI’s GPT-4o model, providing natural communication as if speaking to someone in daily life. OpenAIstates that this feature enables instant conversations, allows pausing, and responds to users' emotions. ChatGPT users who download the desktop app can now enjoy all the features of AVM.
This feature was first introduced at OpenAI’s Spring Update event and made available to beta testers in July. In late September, it reached premium mobile subscribers, and in October, it was extended to free users with a monthly 10-minute limit.
Although initially offered to premium subscribers, AVM quickly gained attention on social media. Users especially enjoyed the ability to pause during long conversations, speak with various accents and tones, and shared their experiences.
