OpenAI considers introducing an advertising model for ChatGPT

OpenAI is exploring ways to increase revenue by implementing an advertising model for its popular AI platform, ChatGPT. Ads are expected to target free users primarily.

Sarah Friar, the company’s CFO, mentioned that they are evaluating the idea of incorporating ads into ChatGPT. Although there is no active plan for immediate implementation, if the decision moves forward, Kevin Weil, known for his Instagram advertising expertise, will play a significant role in the process.

Ad placement in ChatGPT is under review

Sam Altman, CEO of OpenAI, also supports the idea of adopting an advertising model. Currently, OpenAI generates revenue through its API services, enabling third-party developers to integrate AI capabilities into their applications. Additionally, ChatGPT Premium subscriptions, available at higher price points, contribute significantly to the company's earnings.

With Instagram veteran Kevin Weil focusing on ad placement strategies and former Google search advertising executive Shivakumar Venkataraman offering expertise, OpenAI aims to optimize revenue opportunities. However, ads are not expected to be rolled out on ChatGPT anytime soon.
