New encryption to Gmail: Even Google won`t see it!

Google brings end-to-end encryption to Gmail, which improves privacy and makes email sending more secure. The security feature is currently in beta and has been activated only for Google Workspace Enterprise Plus, Education Plus and Education Standard i.e. education accounts.

Even Google won't see it!

The new client-side encryption (E2EE) for Gmail web will make user data and attachments encrypted and unreadable for any third party or even Google itself. This means that all sensitive data of users will be more secure in attached emails. End-to-end encryption in Gmail ensures that email messages are encrypted by the sender and can only be decrypted by the recipient. Google, the third party, the organization, or even the email server will not be able to decrypt or read email messages and attachments. Google already provides client-side encryption for Drive, Docs, Sheets, Slides, Meet, and Calendar. Now this feature is available in Gmail but only to Workspace users.

How to turn on end-to-end encryption in Gmail?

It was not specified when the feature will come for individual users and personal Gmail accounts. Users can currently turn on client-side encryption in the Admin console - Security - Access and data control after joining the beta program. The feature can also be enabled by clicking the lock icon next to the message window and selecting additional encryption. Gmail end-to-end encryption is said to be coming to Android and iOS apps as well.
