Elon Musk: "Artificial intelligence work should stop at least 6 months"

Elon Musk and a group of leading artificial intelligence experts in the industry referred to the potential risks to society and humanity in their open letter. The team led by Musk stated that the development of systems more powerful than the GPT-4 artificial intelligence model, which was just released by OpenAI, should be suspended.

"A race out of control"

The letter, published by the nonprofit Future of Life Institute and signed by more than 1,000 people, including Musk, called for a pause in advanced AI work until common security protocols for such designs are developed, implemented and audited by independent experts. “Strong AI systems should only be developed when we are confident that their impact will be positive and their risks will be manageable,” the letter emphasized. It is stated to be locked in an "out of control race" to develop and distribute it.

"A minimum break of 6 months"

For this reason, it is underlined that the training of systems more powerful than GPT-4 should be interrupted for at least 6 months. It is stated that if this pause process does not start, governments should step in. Signatories include Apple co-founder Steve Wozniak, CEOs such as Skype co-founder Jaan Tallinn, politicians, and well-known artificial intelligence researchers such as Yoshua Bengio and Stuart Russell (Google DeepMind).

The letter also states that technology companies such as Google and Microsoft are in a hurry to launch new products, keeping the concepts of security and ethics in the background. Meanwhile, a Future of Life spokesperson told Reuters that OpenAI CEO Sam Altman did not sign the letter. In summary, it is emphasized that research should slow down until we understand the consequences of artificial intelligence.
