OpenAI provides a memory function to customize ChatGPT. Thus, ChatGPT will remember information about the user and the chat.
OpenAI says that each custom GPT used will have its own memory. As an example, it gives the Books GPT. When the memory is on, it will automatically remember which books you have read and which genres you enjoy the most. OpenAI also gives examples of applications in the GPT store: "Tutor Me can offer a much better long-term tutoring load when it learns what you know. Kayak can direct you to your favourite airlines and hotels. GymStreak can track your progress over time."
Although the memory feature is a feature that ChatGPT needs, it also brings personal privacy problems. OpenAI's strategy here is similar to other internet services. They track you as you use their services, learn what you search for, what you click on, what you like, or anything else, and develop your profile over time.
OpenAI says that the user is in control of ChatGPT's memory and trains the system not to remember sensitive things like information about your health. You can ask ChatGPT what it knows about you, tell it to forget anything, or switch off the feature under "Manage Memory" in the settings. OpenAI also offers a kind of stealth mode with "Ad Hoc Chat."
It will be on by default
The company says that memory will be on by default and that the memory feature will be used to train its models going forward. (Data from companies using ChatGPT Enterprise and Teams will not be sent back to the models.)
In the blog post, the company stated that the memory feature is currently open to a small group of users and is in the testing process. It would not be wrong to say that the feature will quickly become part of the interaction with ChatGPT. AI bots are getting smarter and smarter, and they are getting to know us more and more.
