Apple has reportedly been working with Samsung and LG for years to develop a completely bezel-free iPhone display. However, it seems the technology is still far from reaching production. So, when can we expect a truly bezel-free iPhone?
While smartphone bezels have been shrinking over the years, achieving a fully bezel-free phone remains a distant dream. According to sources, Apple has been collaborating with Samsung Display and LG Display on this project for a long time, but it appears the technology is not yet ready for mass production.
South Korean outlet The Elec reports that Apple initially aimed to launch a zero-bezel iPhone in 2025 or 2026. However, it’s unlikely to materialize even by 2026, as the required technology is still in its infancy.
Apple plans to achieve a bezel-free iPhone by curving the edges of the display, similar to how the Apple Watch’s screen curves at the sides, creating a "pebble-like" design. Curved displays were first introduced by Samsung for the edges and have since been adopted by Chinese manufacturers with micro-curved displays on all four sides. However, Apple does not want the image to extend into the curved areas due to potential distortion issues.
Implementing such a display poses several technical challenges, including the need to bend the OLED panel circuits under the screen, ensuring proper antenna placement without interference, durability issues against drops, and image distortion along the edges. Due to these difficulties, a truly bezel-free iPhone is unlikely to debut before 2027.
