Apple dethrones Samsung after 13 years

IDC shared the table showing global smartphone sales in 2023. Apple sold more phones than Samsung for the first time in 13 years.

According to data from market research company IDC, Apple surpassed Samsung as the world's largest smartphone manufacturer in 2023. Apple surpassed Samsung in smartphone sales for the first time since 2010.

Samsung sells dozens of smartphones, from affordable-budget models to expensive premium foldable models. Thanks to this variety and price range, Samsung has been the manufacturer with the highest market share every year since 2010. However, the situation changed in 2023; Apple closed last year ahead in market share in global smartphone sales. Apple achieved 20.1 per cent market share, while Samsung achieved 19.4 per cent market share.

When we look at the global smartphone sales chart, we see Apple, Samsung and Xiaomi in the top three. However, only Apple managed to increase its sales year on year. The company increased shipments from 226.3 million units to 234.6 million units. Manufacturers such as Huawei, Honor, OnePlus, which have released competitive devices at lower price ranges, have also started to gain a place for themselves.

The smartphone market declined by 3.2% to 1.17 billion units in 2023. However, growth in the second half of 2023 gives hope that the market can revive in 2024. By the way, Apple achieved this success with iPhone 14 sales, not with the iPhone 15 series. In addition, although Apple was at the top in terms of market share in 2023, its revenues fell.
