Meta unveils new AI model – Llama 4!
April 5 – Tech giant Meta Platforms has officially released the latest iteration of its large language model (LLM), named Llama 4 Scout and Llama 4 Maverick.
According to Meta, Llama 4 is a multimodal AI system. This means it can process and integrate various types of content – including text, video, images, and audio – and even convert between these formats, making it highly versatile and innovative.
In a public statement, Meta emphasized that Llama 4 Scout and Llama 4 Maverick are the company’s most advanced AI models to date, calling them “best in class” when it comes to multimodal capabilities.
Importantly, Meta announced that both models will be released as open source software, further promoting accessibility and innovation in the AI field. The company also previewed another upcoming model, Llama 4 Behemoth, described as “one of the smartest LLMs in the world and the most powerful one we’ve ever built”, intended to serve as a teacher model for future developments.
Following the massive success of OpenAI’s ChatGPT, big tech firms have been pouring billions into AI infrastructure, reshaping the industry and accelerating the race in machine learning technologies.
However, a report from The Information revealed that Meta initially delayed the launch of Llama 4 because it didn’t meet the company’s technical benchmarks — especially in reasoning and math performance — during development.
Additionally, the report noted Meta was concerned that Llama 4 was not as capable as OpenAI’s models in conducting humanlike voice conversations.
Nonetheless, Meta has ambitious plans to invest up to $65 billion in 2025 into expanding its AI infrastructure, aiming to deliver meaningful returns for its investors and maintain its leadership in AI innovation.
