Amazon has decided to close a total of
68 physical stores in the United States and the United Kingdom. These stores
include the company`s Pop Up, Book and 4-Star stores. However, the company said
that they understand the importance of face-to-face sales and therefore will
not switch to online sales at all.
Founded in 1994 as an online bookstore,
Amazon opened its first physical bookstore, Amazon Books, in 2015. Later, the
company, which opened many physical stores in the United States, opened its
first 4-Star store in 2018. 4-Star stores sell only 4 star and above products.
In addition to Books and 4-Star stores, the company will close Pop Up stores in
the malls. The reason for the closure of these stores is that the company can
not get the expected performance. The company also opened its first clothing
store, Amazon Style, in late January. The company said it would continue
physical sales. The company did not give a date for when the stores will close.
However, closures are expected to take place at different times depending on
the location. Employees of these stores will be transferred to work in other
departments within Amazon.
