According to the report published by research firm International Data Corporation (IDC), Apple's iPhone sales fell by about 10 per cent globally in the first quarter of 2024. While the report gives serious signals for Apple, Samsung recaptured the summit it lost to Apple last year with strong Galaxy S24 sales in the first quarter. Here are the best-selling smartphone brands in the first period of 2024:
Best-selling smartphone brands (2024 January-March)
According to the IDC report, Apple shipped 50.1 million units in the first quarter, down 9.6 per cent year-on-year. Apple's market share fell to 17.3 per cent. Apple recorded the sharpest decline among the top five smartphone brands in the report. Samsung recaptured the top spot it lost to Apple last year with a market share of 20.8 per cent in the first quarter. The company shipped 60.1 units in this period.
In the IDC report, Samsung, Apple, Xiaomi, Transsion (Techno, itel, Infinix) and Oppo made up the top five companies in the ranking of the best-selling smartphone brands. Xiaomi's shipments increased by 33.8 per cent to 40.8 million units in the first quarter, while Transsion increased by 84.9 per cent to 28.5 million units. Oppo's shipments fell 8.5 per cent to 25.2 million in the first quarter.
It is also necessary to open a parenthesis to the Transsion group here. Transsion, which owns the Tecno, Itel and Infinix brands, has quietly become one of the fifth largest smartphone manufacturers in the world.
Technology giant Huawei and its subsidiary Honor did not make the top five list, but according to Counterpoint Research, they were the best performing smartphone brands in the first six weeks of 2024. One of the strong factors in Apple's decline was Huawei's Mate 60 series phones.
