The feature WhatsApp had for years is now coming to Google Messages

Google Messages is introducing a backup and restore feature. Currently, messages can only be backed up through Google One, with no option for in-app backup.

Google is making it easier to back up conversations in Google Messages. The new backup option will allow users to save chats, photos, videos, and more, with the ability to restore them seamlessly. Once logged into your Google account, conversations will be automatically restored.

The Backup and Restore feature will appear directly within the Google Messages app, so there will be no need to navigate to Settings to start a backup. Additionally, there will be an option to "Sync media only via WiFi," which is ideal for those who wish to limit their mobile data usage.

Google also assures that the backup will be protected by end-to-end encryption.

While not entirely new, since Android phones have allowed message backups for years, this feature was previously handled by the system itself. The new backup feature, however, is integrated directly within the messaging app.
