Canalys and Counterpoint, which conduct market research on technological products, revealed the striking losses in the smartphone market. While shipments and sales decreased in the second quarter of the year, the second hand and premium market started to rise. So, how are the situations in the list of names such as Apple, Samsung and Xiaomi?
According to the report, which covers the second quarter of 2023, there was a decrease of 11 percent in smartphone shipments and 8 percent in sales on an annual basis. At this point, Samsung managed to maintain its leadership with a market share of 21 to 22 percent. The name that came right after Samsung was Apple with 17 percent market share. Xiaomi, the third largest brand, had a 13 percent market share according to Canalys. Oppo (10 percent) and Vivo (8 percent) follow respectively.
According to Counterpoint, the US, Japan and Western Europe experienced double-digit declines in smartphone sales. But compared to lower-end smartphones, Premium device sales continue to rise. So much so that this was the only segment that showed an increase during the quarter. According to Canalys, at least one in five smartphones sold in the second quarter was a flagship.
Saying that the global smartphone market has left its rapid growth phase behind at this point, Counterpoint stated that this sharp decline is related to the second-hand market and the prolongation of phone replacement cycles.
