Surface Laptop 6: AI PC era begins

Microsoft introduced the Surface Laptop 6 with Snapdragon X Elite and Plus processors.

Microsoft has updated the Surface Laptop 6 for Business laptops it introduced in March with Qualcomm's Snapdragon X Elite and Plus processors for end users. Coming in 13.8-inch and 15-inch screen sizes, the computers are quite ambitious with high performance, artificial intelligence capabilities and long battery life.

Surface Laptop 6 has configurations starting from Snapdragon X Plus processor, 16 GB RAM and 256 GB SSD storage up to 32 GB RAM and 1 TB SSD. The laptops are available in four colour options: black, platinum, sand and sapphire.

Surface Laptop 6 features a 2304 x 1536 (13.8-inch) or 2496 x 1664 (15-inch) resolution, 120Hz variable refresh rate touchscreen with Dolby Vision IQ support. Microsoft has updated the display, thinning the bezels and rounding the corners.

Both display sizes feature two USB-C ports and a USB-A 3.1 port, and a 1080p camera. The 15-inch model comes with a 65-watt charging adapter, while the 13.8-inch version includes a 39-watt charger.

Microsoft says the new Surface Laptop is 80 per cent faster than the previous generation and can play up to 22 hours of local video on a single charge. The laptop has a touchpad with haptic feedback, just like Apple's MacBooks have had for years. Unlike the MacBook Air, Microsoft says the laptop will support three 4K monitors in addition to its own display.

Microsoft also announced new on-device AI features, such as an AI-powered Recall feature that allows users to search through apps, documents and folders using Copilot. And it announced that computers with AI capabilities will be available under the ‘Copilot Plus PC’ brand from now on. Microsoft also highlighted features such as on-device video call translation, performing live translation of three languages simultaneously during the event. The company says only PCs labelled Copilot Plus will support such features.

Surface Laptop 6 price

The 2024 Surface Laptop is available for pre-order starting at $ 999 for the 13.8-inch model or $1299 for the 15-inch model. It was announced that deliveries will be made on 18 June.
