Sam Altman announces ChatGPT-5 won’t arrive this year

OpenAI CEO Sam Altman revealed during a Q&A session on Reddit that the next version of ChatGPT, known as GPT-5, has been postponed until next year.

Sam Altman confirmed that the new ChatGPT version is now scheduled for release in early 2025. Although he did not specify a precise date, Altman noted that OpenAI would prioritize updates to existing ChatGPT models.

"New models are becoming increasingly complex"

Sam Altman explained that the updated ChatGPT models are growing more complex, limiting OpenAI’s ability to work on multiple updates simultaneously. Computational power is also a significant challenge, forcing OpenAI to make tough decisions on implementing new ideas.

Altman commented on the topic: "We’re prioritizing the release of O1 and its successors. All these models have become quite complex, and we can’t introduce as many new features at once as we would like. (We’re also facing many limitations and tough choices on how to allocate our computational power to various brilliant ideas.) We don’t have a set date for Advanced Voice Mode yet."

In another response, Altman mentioned that OpenAI will release strong updates later this year. He emphasized that all ongoing work on ChatGPT’s updated models will remain impressive and clarified that nothing OpenAI is currently developing deserves the GPT-5 title.

ChatGPT-5 is viewed as a major milestone for OpenAI. The new version is expected to be a significant leap, similar to the transition from GPT-3 to GPT-4. GPT-5 is anticipated to offer a human-like AI experience, making it feel like conversing with an actual person.
