OpenAI announces SearchGPT, an AI-powered search engine

OpenAI announced that it is testing SearchGPT, a tentative prototype of its new AI search capabilities that delivers fast and timely answers with clear and relevant sources.

OpenAI has finally announced the AI-powered SearchGPT search engine. SearchGPT will provide fast and direct answers to your questions using up-to-date information on the web and provide clear links to relevant resources.

SearchGPT search engine rivals Google

SearchGPT will be a search engine that provides real-time access to information on the Internet. However, unlike other search engines, it will not only provide links but also summarise and make sense of the information it finds.

For example, when you search for music festivals, it will provide you with short descriptions and links with details of the events. For example, you want information about cucumber planting. SearchGPT will tell you about planting times and different cucumber varieties.

SearchGPT Search Engine features:

  • Summarisation and resource links: Search results are summarised and presented to the user and supported with resource links.
  • Real-time information access: SearchGPT provides users with instant access to information on the Internet.
  • Visual answers: The visual answers feature provides more interactive and visually rich search results.

Currently, SearchGPT is only open to 10 thousand test users. OpenAI uses direct content feeds to generate search results by working with third-party partners. This service is being offered at the prototype stage as a feature initially planned to be integrated into ChatGPT.

OpenAI developed SearchGPT in collaboration with various news partners. It is constantly improving the system with feedback from organisations such as The Wall Street Journal, The Associated Press and Vox Media. Publishers will be able to manage how their content appears and will be given options to opt out of having their content used in model training.

SearchGPT will be a serious competitor to Google's efforts to integrate AI features. Even Google is rumoured to be closely following these developments. In addition, OpenAI's costs are rising rapidly and they need to find ways to monetise with this new product.
