Once arch rivals: Samsung and Huawei
South Korea-based technology giant Samsung adds a new one to the patents transferred to Huawei. To recall, both companies signed a cross-patent agreement in 2019 to end their patent disputes. Renewing this agreement in the past days, Samsung is now transferring 98 patents it has in the USA to its Chinese rival.
Includes charging, camera, display and telecommunications technologies
According to the reports, among the transferred patents, in addition to charging, camera and display technologies, there are especially telecommunication products. As it is known, Huawei has many patents on 5G and telecommunications technologies, and in such cross-licensing agreements, one party pays the other more for the number and quality of patents. The newly transferred patents by Samsung are reportedly equal to the difference in value. Huawei, once one of Samsung's main competitors, has been hit hard by the trade ban and embargoes from the US. Currently trying to increase its revenue through patent licensing agreements, the company has cross-patent agreements with 19 other companies, including Samsung. We can say that the new agreement will be especially beneficial for Huawei, which has been hit hard by the US embargoes. Prior to the lockdown, Huawei was the world leader in 5G and 6G research and had signed a number of infrastructure contracts in multiple jurisdictions. The specific details of the deal are currently unknown, but the shared technologies are expected to benefit both companies.
