New version of AirPods Max now uses USB-C

Apple has announced a new version of AirPods Max and the headphones are finally getting rid of the Lightning port. Different colour options have been added to the new version that will use USB-C.

Apple announced a new version of AirPods Max, which has not received a hardware update for nearly four years. The relevant upgrade includes the transition from Apple's proprietary Lightning port to USB-C.

The new AirPods Max are available for pre-order from today for $549 (the same price as the previous model) in five new colour options - midnight, starlight, blue, orange and purple - and will be available from 20 September.

Apple also said that AirPods Max will support Personalised Spatial Audio with the upcoming iOS 18 software update. The announced changes are so small that Apple does not seem to refer to the new headphones as AirPods Max 2.
