Though Samsung entered the VR market ten years ago with the Gear VR, this product line was short-lived. Now, the company is preparing to launch a mixed reality device next year.
Samsung, the technology giant, plans to launch a new mixed reality (XR) device in 2025. This step follows the company’s initial success in the virtual reality market with the Gear VR device introduced in 2015. According to Samsung’s third-quarter financial report, the new XR device could be unveiled alongside the Galaxy S25 series.
This device is expected to enhance connectivity within Samsung’s ecosystem and solidify the company’s commitment to XR technology. Samsung’s new mixed reality headset is being developed in collaboration with Google and Qualcomm. It’s expected to feature a Snapdragon XR2+ Gen 2 chipset, 16 GB RAM, and a high-resolution, brighter micro-OLED display.
The device is anticipated to run on Android 14, be equipped with advanced sensors for environmental awareness, and potentially offer health tracking features. Additionally, the user experience is expected to be personalized with a feature similar to the “Persona mode” in Apple’s Vision Pro.
Samsung plans to unveil the XR device at the Galaxy Unpacked event in early 2025 alongside the Galaxy S25 series. This strategy allows Samsung to position the XR device as part of the Galaxy ecosystem.
Meanwhile, it's unclear exactly what the XR device mentioned in Samsung’s report will entail. While Samsung has been working on this with Google and Qualcomm, industry trends are moving towards augmented reality (AR) glasses compatible with smartphones. It’s anticipated that Samsung could also consider AR glasses. A device similar to Meta’s Ray-Ban glasses could be expected, potentially establishing Samsung’s XR glasses as a core accessory for Galaxy smartphones.
