Technology giant Samsung was able to be included in the list of the 10 best-selling phones worldwide with only two phones, according to a statistic. While all the other eight phones are owned by Apple, the company has managed to be the only Android OEM to make it to the top 10 list of best-selling smartphones thanks to its low-cost Galaxy A devices.
Samsung and Google are losing their Generation Z customers day by day
In terms of high-end phones, while Samsung is the leader in the Android smartphone segment, Apple is outpacing all other OEMs, especially in western markets. A recent study shows that more and more Generation Z customers prefer iPhones over Android phones. While 37% of iPhone users in the US are Gen Z, only 10% of Samsung users are Gen Z. In other words, while Apple is steadily growing its iPhone user base, Android is losing ground especially in upper segment devices in western markets.
But Samsung's biggest enemy in its quest to sell more high-end phones in western markets may not be its hardware or Apple's competitive products, but the Android operating system itself. Because, according to interviews with Generation Z users, users do not like Android as much as they do not like Samsung. Among the reasons for this are social pressures due to features such as the green-blue chat bubble separation pioneered by iMessage or AirDrop exclusive to Apple devices. It's not just Samsung that has lost the interest of Generation Z. 40% of Generation Z prefer to search the internet using social platforms instead of Google search engine. As a result, Google's reputation is not helping Android, and in turn, it may be slowly depleting Samsung's premium price-range smartphone business in western markets.
