Instagram is making a series of changes to its algorithm to better favour content from smaller, original creators. These changes will also penalise stolen content.
Instagram will start to emphasise original content and smaller content creators with algorithm-based updates. On the other hand, the platform says that in the past, content creators with large followings and accounts that repost content have gained the most reach on the platform. With the changes to be implemented in the next few months, Instagram will provide a more equal footing for all content creators in terms of access.
The biggest change in the algorithm update concerns accounts that repost other users' content. In most cases, these accounts post without attribution or sometimes with attribution to the original source. With the update, Instagram will begin removing such repost accounts and their content from recommendations across the platform.
The changes also target accounts that do not create content or share the same content repeatedly without making any significant changes. If content is shared more than 10 times within 30 days, it will be subject to the changes. These changes will not affect publishers/accounts identified by Instagram, with whom Instagram has licence agreements or with whom creators have granted repost permissions.
However, content that is re-shared on Reels or across the platform will be replaced with the original in platform recommendations. Instagram will rely on audio and visual signals to replace the original content.
Instagram will also begin adding tags to reposted content that will direct users to the original creator. The tag will be visible to followers of the account that reposted the content. For now, either the original creator or the account that reposted the content will have the option to remove the tag, the company says.
The changes may extend beyond ‘meme’ accounts or pages dedicated to reposting content from other creators. Accounts sharing infographics from organisations or celebrity fan pages could also be affected by the algorithm updates.
Instagram also announced that the recommendation system will be updated to give all content creators an equal chance. Reportedly, Instagram will recommend appropriate content to a small audience that it thinks will like it.
As people engage with the content, the best performing set of Reels will be shown to a slightly larger audience. Then the best of these will be shown to an even larger group and so on. It looks like a kind of beta system. Instagram believes that this change will give all content creators an equal chance to find an audience.
Although the company does not give a clear date, it says that these changes will be available in the coming months.
