Google has announced a shift in its Android release schedule by planning to launch Android 16, codenamed “Baklava,”in the second quarter of 2025. Traditionally, Android versions have been released in the third quarter each year.
The company stated that this change aligns with the launch timelines of devices within the Google ecosystem, allowing more devices to receive the Android version earlier. Last year, Pixel 9 was launched in August, but since Android 15 was not ready, it came with Android 14. Under the new schedule, Pixel 10 will ship with Android 16.
Typically launched in October and November, Android flagship models will now have more time to integrate the latest version. Additionally, Google aims to gain a competitive edge by launching ahead of iOS.
In the new setup, Google will offer developers a major release in the second quarter, followed by a smaller SDK with added features in the fourth quarter. While compatibility testing will need to be completed earlier, this approach will benefit more devices, allowing them to access new features right away and giving applications more reasons to support these updates.
