User data that the Google Chrome browser has collected unauthorisedly in the incognito tab for years will be destroyed. Google got rid of the lawsuit by asking for a settlement. 

Almost all browsers have an incognito tab feature that claims not to record users' data. Users can browse using the incognito tab when they do not want to be tracked. 

Giant penalty to Chrome browser

In 2020, the allegation that the Google Chrome browser followed its users in the incognito tab and gave false information about it fell like a bomb on the agenda. The lawsuit, which continued for years, ended with a settlement last year. 

In the lawsuit, $5000 was demanded to be paid to the victims, while billions of data points that have been unauthorisedly obtained so far were requested to be destroyed. Although Google argued for a long time that the incognito tab did not provide users with complete privacy, the court ruled that the company did not inform users properly. 

In addition to destroying huge amounts of user data, Google must also disable third-party cookies by default over the next five years. Instead, a privacy-focused interface that categorises browsing behaviour and creates topics will be used.
