Apple may partner with Meta on AI

The two long-time rivals have been in talks about potentially integrating Meta's generative AI model into Apple Intelligence.

According to reports, Facebook's parent company has been in talks with Apple about integrating Meta Platforms' generative AI model into Apple Intelligence, the recently announced AI system for iPhones and other devices.

Apple and Meta discuss artificial intelligence partnership

Meta and other companies developing generative AI are hoping to capitalise on the massive distribution Apple offers through its iPhones. It wants to do this in a similar way to what Apple offers with the App Store on the iPhone.

A late entrant into generative AI, Apple has developed its own small AI models but has announced that it will turn to partners for more complex or specific tasks. When Apple Intelligence was unveiled at the company's Worldwide Developers Conference earlier this month, OpenAI's ChatGPT was announced as the company's first partner.

"We wanted to start with the best," said Apple software leader Craig Federighi, noting that ChatGPT "represents the best choice for our users today." He also said Apple wants to integrate Google's Gemini.

In addition to Google and Meta, AI startups Anthropic and Perplexity are also in talks with Apple to bring their generative AI to Apple Intelligence, people familiar with the talks said.
