Apple May Finally Introduce High Refresh Rates with iPhone 17

Apple might finally abandon the much-criticized 60 Hz refresh rate in the base and Plus models of the iPhone 17. Next year, the entire iPhone 17 series is expected to feature high refresh rates.

When Apple unveiled the iPhone 16 series, many were disappointed that the standard iPhone 16 and iPhone 16 Plus models still had 60 Hz refresh rate displays. With entry-level Android phones already featuring high refresh rates as standard, Apple’s persistence with 60 Hz on phones starting at $800 drew heavy criticism. However, this might change with the iPhone 17 series.

Popular Weibo leaker Digital Chat Station has reported that Apple plans to improve the refresh rate on standard and Plus models. However, specific details about the refresh rate remain unknown.

For reference, iPhone Pro and Pro Max models use ProMotion display technology, offering refresh rates ranging from 1 Hz to 120 Hz. This allows dynamic adjustment of the refresh rate based on on-screen content, optimizing energy efficiency. Apple might bring this technology to non-Pro models. Alternatively, fixed 90 Hz or 120 Hz refresh ratescould also be an option. For now, it remains unclear what approach Apple will take.
